IntroductionCompensation plans are based on a multi‑step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade. A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and Montgomery Personnel Board Rules & Regulations.Nature of WorkThe fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform the duties of equipment operator in the installation and maintenance of traffic control pavement markings and signs. Position incumbents are primarily assigned to either the Street Striping subdivision or the Sign subdivision and perform the duties associated with that subdivision; however, all position incumbents are cross‑trained on the duties of both subdivisions and can be utilized as needed. Positions assist the Traffic Maintenance Worker III in training Traffic Maintenance Worker Is and may serve as lead workers for two to six member crews.ResponsibilitiesPrimary operator of striping machines, thermoplastic melting and striping machines, cold‑laid plastic machine, and bituminous machines.Training Traffic Maintenance Worker Is on operation of machines.Assisting in the onsite layout of pavement markings for installation and revitalization projects.Serving as the lead worker on sign crews.Assisting in the construction of street and traffic control signs.Performing additional duties in service to the department.Minimum QualificationsHigh school diploma or GED and one year of experience at the Traffic Maintenance Worker I level or equivalent. Must also have at least six months of experience operating paint striping equipment and/or sign manufacturing machines.Physical RequirementsPhysical ability to walk on asphalt surfaces for distances of up to 5 miles in one day in order to assist with paint striping and sign operations.Physical ability to stoop, crouch, bend and kneel in order to assist with equipment operation and maintenance, loading or unloading equipment, and preparing surfaces for striping and signing operations.Physical ability to lift, carry, pull, and push equipment or materials weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance.Physical ability to lift, carry, pull and push equipment or materials weighing up to 150 pounds with assistance.Physical ability to frequently climb into and out of the bed of a truck in order to secure tools or materials, install or remove sign posts, and clean road signs.Physical ability to lift and strike a sign post with a 16 pound sledge hammer using hand‑eye coordination and physical strength.Work ConditionsWork performed involves a moderate to extensive amount of manual labor. The work is performed in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements, including direct sun, extreme heat and/or cold, rain, and lightning. There is exposure to strong fumes from solvents, paints, and other chemicals. The job requires frequent use of metal, glass, bituminous, and other materials, which may cause cuts, abrasions, and bruises. Work is performed in uncontrolled environments such as in close proximity to heavy traffic, in unkempt areas with tall weeds and potentially poisonous plants, and with exposure to ants, bees, insects, and other local wildlife.
